for the love of Mindy

I’ve been a long time fan of The Office and somehow without even knowing it, I’ve become a huge fan of of Mindy Kaling … aka Kelly Kapoor.

Who would’ve known all those culture-centric jokes in those episodes resonate so well with audiences?  I’m sure she’s the one to credit for planking jokesTwilight posters, and the ridiculousness of Kelly and Ryan’s relationship.  And her dancing seriously gets me every time in these two clips:  CPR Training and the Dunder Mifflin Theme Song

Anyways.  her new book just premiered!  I’ve had it on my Amazon Wish List for awhile and I almost forgot about it … until the Blogosphere took over and made sure none of us forgot.

“Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” is sure to be jam-packed with humorous musings and observations from life.

She’s a brilliant writer.  That has to be a given since some of best episodes of The Office were penned by her (“The Injury” where Michael steps on a George Foreman Grill, “The Dundies” and “Micheal’s Last Dundies” for memorable awards moments, and “Niagara Falls” where Jim & Pam get married”).

Here’s an excerpt from the book … and I totally agree.

Non-Traumatic Things That Have Made Me Cry

MARK DARCY

All women love Colin Firth: Mr. Darcy, Mark Darcy, George VI — at this point he could play the Craigslist Killer and people would be like, “Oh my God, the Craigslist Killer has the most boyish smile!” I love Colin Firth in everything, even as the obsessed, miffed, tortured non-Ralph Fiennes husband in The English Patient. But the role that makes me cry is Mark Darcy, from Bridget Jones’s Diary.

When we first meet Mark, he’s kind of a, well, dick. He’s arrogant and judgmental and seems to take himself so seriously. But he is secretly wonderful (and not so secretly gorgeous). There is a part in the movie — I’ve seen it six or seven times, and I swear to God, every time I see it coming, I start tearing up in anticipation — when we first see that Mark Darcy is not a bad guy. In fact, we see that he is the best guy ever.

Do you guys remember the scene when Bridget is sneaking out of the horrible couples dinner, having humiliated herself in front of all of her “smug marrieds”? And when she’s at the door, Mark stops her and he says, “I like you, very much. Just as you are.”

It’s ridiculous that I love this so much. It’s so simple. It’s not a witty, perfectly phrased, Ephron-y declaration by our charming, neurotic hero. It’s so … plain. But the idea is the most beautiful thing in the world. So, obviously, it makes me cry.

Anyways.  Check out her book!  And eat some pink cupcakes.  I think that would be fitting :)

5 Things Tuesday

Happy November!!  Are you excited, I’m excited.  Autumn is my favorite season.

1.  NO SHAVE NOVEMBER … aka MOVEMBER - I’m pretty sure It’s a nationwide hipster tradition to not shave in November, right?

When I was at ORU I remember the missions department would all walk around with pedo-staches (so gross btw) in November, like some sort of manly camaraderie.

And at RELEVANT the guys all grew out their beards as a company-wide contest.   It took awhile for Ryan Hamm’s beard to grow in, and Justin had some patchiness going on.  But eventually Chad won best beard.

Well it’s officially November again.  Cheers to all those who are embracing their manliness this month!

2.  PY IS GETTING MARRIED - I’ve mentioned Parker Young’s incredibly rad musical taste before, but I haven’t really mentioned what an amazing photographer he is. Seriously, check out his work.  Super talented.

Anyways, I’ve known both Parker and his sister Stephanie Kyle since the HA.  It’s been almost a decade!  But now, he’s the one who’s engaged.  I’m so happy for him :)

I wonder who’s going to shoot his wedding …

3.  STREAM TWILIGHT’S SOUNDTRACK - I’m not super into Twilight like hardcore fans, but I have seen the movies.  And well, to be honest, the one thing that really sticks for me is the music.

Twilight has the best soundtracks.  And get this, you can actually stream the newest one right from their Facebook profile!  I call that awesome.

4.  I LOVE WATCHING THE AMAZING RACE - I am currently catching up on this season’s Amazing Race & I’m just remembering how much I LOVE this show.  It’s cleaner than the MTV’s Challenges and it’s a worldwide adventure.  And I love how this one is partnerships and more vulnerable to actual hiccups across the board:  language barriers, money exchanges, cultural challenges, delayed flights, taxis.

Team Jumba is still my favorite :)

5.  I’M EXCITED FOR FOX THIS WEEK - for a few reasons:  Damian McGinty is going to be on Glee tonight, New Girl comes back, and Bones starts on Thursday.  Triple awesome!

HAVE ANY EXCITING STUFF HAPPEN IN YOUR LIFE?  PLEASE SHARE … I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOU GUYS TOO :)

Zombie Lessons

Just in case you need to travel through a swarm of zombies undetected …

Happy Halloween everyone!

*clip from Shaun of the Dead - a hilarious zombie movie.  I recommend watching either this or Zombieland instead of those crazy scary horror movies. I never fared well with the gory/gruesome stuff*
